We're All in the Same Sinking Boat

9-20So where does that put us? Do we Jews get a better break than the others? Not really. Basically, all of us, whether insiders or outsiders, start out in identical conditions, which is to say that we all start out as sinners. Scripture leaves no doubt about it:

There's nobody living right, not even one,

nobody who knows the score, nobody alert for God.

They've all taken the wrong turn;

they've all wandered down blind alleys.

No one's living right;

I can't find a single one.

Their throats are gaping graves,

their tongues slick as mudslides.

Every word they speak is tinged with poison.

They open their mouths and pollute the air.

They race for the honor of sinner-of-the-year,

litter the land with heartbreak and ruin,

Don't know the first thing about living with others.

They never give God the time of day.

This makes it clear, doesn't it, that whatever is written in these Scriptures is not what God says about others but to us to whom these Scriptures were addressed in the first place! And it's clear enough, isn't it, that we're sinners, every one of us, in the same sinking boat with everybody else? Our involvement with God's revelation doesn't put us right with God. What it does is force us to face our complicity in everyone else's sin.

This chapter is comparing the law to faith. Look up Jeremiah 31: and look around verse 31 you will see the Jews were promised a new covenant. The first covenant was the law. The law is righteous but the center of the covenant was the sacrifice required for breaking it. When you look at the law no one kept it 100 % so all were guilty in one way or another. Is God really happy with the blood of goats, rams, cows, bulls or doves,? no. God says a broken and contrite heart; that means one that is truly sorry god will honor. But the animal sacrifices were ordered as a prophecy of the sacrifice that Jesus would make. Once Jesus came the forgiveness was no longer through the law but through faith in the perfect sacrifice Jesus was. Salvation is defined as believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth.. This means you are a different person than before and that is why we are baptized as a sign of dieing and being born again.

And basically, from some clues provided in Romans Chapter 9, it says that the Jews were given God's Law but missed its point; and the Gentiles that did not have the law, gained faith when told about God, therefore the Gentiles were given God's Kingdom.

This is not to say Jews cannot attain entry into God's Kingdom, they most certainly can. But they do not inherit it simply by being a descendant of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob any more.

God’s servants are entrusted not only with a gift to be used in behalf of their fellow believers but also with a message to be shared with their fellow man. The apostle Paul recognized these two aspects of his service to Jehovah. He wrote to the congregation in Ephesus regarding “the stewardship of the undeserved kindness of God” that was given to him for their benefit. (Eph. 3:2) Yet, he also stated: “We have been proved by God as fit to be entrusted with the good news.” (1 Thess. 2:4) Like Paul, we too recognize that we are entrusted with the assignment of serving as preachers of God’s Kingdom. By sharing zealously in the preaching work, we strive to imitate the example that Paul set as an untiring proclaimer of the good news. (Acts 20:20, 21; 1 Cor. 11:1) We know that preaching the Kingdom message can save lives.
