Why would Hendrick motor sports sell motors and chassis to Stewart ?
When they have four drivers racing against him.

This is Hendricks backdoor to avoiding NASCAR's four team limit. It used to be much more rare than it is today. Roush, and Hendicks supply roughly half the field with something.
Basically you have Hendricks, Roush, Gibbs, RCR and Penske all competitive teams are somehow linked to one of these organizations.
Look at Jayski.com team page and see where people get their engines.
Stewart being called an owner is a farce! Hendricks is the owner of that team.

And you think Stewart is the only other driver / team Hendrik sells chassis and motor to?
They do it for the same reason all Ford cars and engines used by other teams come from Roush.
The more cars and engines major teams build the more everyone learns.

Stewart-Haas in a way is a satellite team for Hendrick. The more cars or in this case affiliated cars that they have on track, the more data, hence the better the cars. Its not the only instance of this happening in Cup.
Roush Fenway did with Yates & does with Wood Brothers
Joe Gibbs did with Hall of Fame Racing
Michael Waltrip Racing did with JTG/Daugherty Racing

Do you realize how expensive it would be for Stewart/Haas to have its own motor and chassis department? It's less expensive to buy or lease motors and chassis from an organization that produces many of them than to try to do your own few.
By the way, if Doug Yates would cease producing motors for the Ford teams, where do you think the Ford teams would get their motors? In my honest opinion, Richard Yates "selling out" to Jack Roush was the biggest mistake of his racing career. I miss Yates Racing!

Its all about the Green Backs, Dinero, Benjimans. Most of the bigger teams such as HMS, RCR, Roush Fenway Racing sometimes sell new or used equipment to teams that are either just starting out or the smaller teams to make money. They then use that money to improve their own equipmen. Most top racing teams build their own engines from scratch. The total cost of these engines, which take more than 100 hours to build, is anywhere between $45,000 and $80,000.

Because of the 4 team rule and because the have engines for sale. Roush-Yates engines are used by Roush-Fenway, and RPM, and MWR is going to use JGR engines in 2012. The best engines for all the makes are made by a few teams.
