How to send canvas paintings?

If I were to sell my canvas paintings, how do I send it without it getting any dents or stretched or torn?

If your piece is on a stretcher/pre bought these are the steps I would go through. Wrap the painting in paper, tissue paper or blank news print will do the trick. If you don't have a lot of paper just cover the side with the paint. Wrap the painting then with bubble wrap if you have any, then wrap that in plastic, a garbage bag or two will do just fine.

Then measure the face of the painting and cut a piece of cardboard that is slightly larger then the painting itself. Cut another piece for the back that is the same size as the top. Then for Each side cut out a piece of cardboard that is slightly larger then the width of the side of the painting. Take all your pieces and construct your own custom box after, using tape or hot glue. Slip the painting covered in the plastic/bubble wrap/paper into the box. Tape the box closed and then cover the box with another garbage bag and tape that closed.

I usually overkill with packing because water damage sucks, and it is better to be safe then sorry.

If your painting is still wet/ or a thickly painted oil painting, do not place anything on top of the paint itself. Instead build a box around the painting first and make the sides larger so the top of the box sits above the surface of the painting itself. With this method attach the bottom of the box to the back side of the painting. The staple should go through the box and into the wooden stretcher. With this method the painting should not slide around within the box so you can avoid smearing the wet paint. Cover the box in plastic, a garbage bag will do.

If you have the money a custom built wooden crate will always be better then a custom built cardboard box. However this will increase your shipping costs dramatically.

    How To Ship Canvas Art

  • vor 10 Jahren

If you buy stretched canvases that don't have extra canvas wrapped around the back it will be very difficult to stretch it later. Do Not take the canvas off the bars to ship. It should be crated to ship. Make sure the painting is protected on both sides from any packing material by using stiff cardboard or foam core.

Roll it up very loosely w/ the painting on the outside and use another piece of canvas to cover it and make sure the it is a fine weave and not a coarse one. It is your decision to put it on the painting before or after you roll it. Place it vertical and warn the buyer. Good Luck in your art career. My friend who is a graphic designer but does art on the side showed me this.

I recommend putting the painting in a frame. If the size of the painting is thick, you can buy a shadow box frame, floater frame, or a frame with a deep profile. If you do not want to use a frame, then maybe you can put the painting in an acid-free bag or wrap it with acid-free paper.

One of the less expensive ways is to find a cheap artist frame that size, to create a standoff.

Then cut 3/8 or 12 Foam board .both front and back.

    Tape it to death .

The old or cheap frame actually creates a shipping box of sort.

And the foam board is strong and light.

If you do roll any painting, it should be at a 6in diameter.
