My pet Jack Russell terrier has recently started barking during the night.?
He's nearly 2 years old now and its never been something he's done since he was a young pup but recently (about the last 3 weeks) he's began to bark during the night. This is obviously causing me and my family many sleepless nights. Nothing seems to have changed but its become a mystery as why he's started now. Does anyone have any ideas of how to stop him or any reasons why he's started now? I don't want to muzzle him but i'm running out of ideas.
He has been neutered and we live in an urban area.
Eric. Funnily enough, my son spotted a fox (which is unusual in these parts) last week...could be it, thanks.
I understand he's possibly trying to alert me to something (it does sound urgent, sometimes even yelping). However i wouldn't even consider muzzling unless someone told me it was the only solution, because i would not punish him for being a dog. So many great answers and help btw.
Many thanks to everyone.

I always argue with hubby when something like this happens with ours. He'll say there's nothing out there, but believe me, when a dog barks during the night, SOMETHING has disturbed him. Remembering that his hearing is far more acute than yours is. At the risk of annoying the neighbours, why not let him out when he starts this, and watch what he does/where he goes to in the garden. I'd lay odds there's a wild animal or a cat prowling around out there.
If your dog is entire, it's also possible there's a new b itch in the area, and she's in season. The good news there is she'll be out - seasons last 21 days, with her 'on' days around day 10 - 14. And once that's over, he should settle down again. Hopefully the owner will do the right thing and get her spayed!!
Don't muzzle him - that's cruel, and won't be effective in any case.

Yeah they make great pets if you have time for them. I have a 2 year old female JRT as well as 2 Border Terriers and they all get on great. However she can be quite aggressive towards strange dogs that we walk past (barking, growling etc) JRTs are very smart so their easy to housebreak and train. Within about 6-7 months mine could sit, stay, lie down, roll over and give a paw. However you do need to give it as much exercise as possible as the pent up energy could lead to them destroying furniture etc. As for grooming, 1 brush a week sufices. They're great with kids to!! Good luck if you do get one!! You'll never have another dull moment again lol

I definitely agree that something is disturbing him. Let him out, on leash if you like, and follow him where he investigates.
Is the barking incessant, even after you try to calm him down and go back to bed? Is it a very urgent bark with growls as if he's feeling threatened/protective? Is it every night, at the same time? Is it all night long?
If there's no obvious sign and no threat to your home, you can try a vibrating bark collar as opposed to spray collar or shock collar which is even more uncomfortable. If you get one that's remote control, you can keep the remote control on your night table and if the range is good enough, press the button when the dog barks to attempt to silence him. Then it will also make sure he doesn't associate the negative with you directly.

There's just a chance there's a fox around your garden somewhere. I had a similar experience and I noticed the next morning the dogs flew out on to the garden and were really sniffing about. For what its worth they also act the same if you had a hedgehog

it could be a number of outside things, like maybe some one new in the neighborhood lets a cat out at night and it jumps up on window sills. or if you brought home a mouse in a new or old piece of furniture. they move around at night.
i had a family of ferry diddles (flying squirrels) move into the attic one fall. they move around and play all night and make noise.
you dog is hearing something you do not. if he is not in the habit of barking at night and just started he is just trying to do his job and alerting you to an intruder .abit something you cant hear or discern at night. look around at night on the outside of your home, and look inside for obvious signs of mice .
please don't punish him for doing his job.
Quelle(n): mean old lady @ do not getinsulted about mice. they come in to the cleanset homes in allsorts of ways and espically in thf fall and winter. - vor 10 Jahren
