Do you give your toddler vitamins?

My daughter (20 months old) is typically a good eater, and I always offer her a good variety of foods through out the day, but I do let her self feed and so she picks what she wants. My mum mentioned that when we were younger all children over 6 months were offered vitamin drops, and I can honestly say that I never even considered it, it got me thinking, should i be giving her some sort of multi vitamin supplement as a back up? I know they are not a replacement for a good balanced diet, an I will always offer her a good variety of healthy foods (with the occasional treat).

Do you give your LO a multi vitamin?

Is there any reason why I shouldn't?

Be aware, gummy vitamins very often get their Omegas from fish-oil, and this caused a rash in my daughter (asthma attack in me.) We're allergic to fish apparently, but it's not something I would try again with someone under 3. And Pediasure isn't really recommended for children under 2 unless under pediatrician recommendation.

For my son (15 months) he gets toddler formula, which has a lot of vitamins and nutrients. My daughter (3 years) gets 1/2 of a Flintstone's Complete. I use the multivitamin/formula as a safety net to be honest. I took nutrition courses at University to the level that the professional nutritionists have, but I still don't trust them to eat everything they should, and just like that bit of a safety net.

I give my eldest son a vitamin and omega 3 supplement. I am not super mum like so many people on here seem to be and my son doesn't always eat the healthiest of things so it's just piece of mind really. Also he's had some developmental delays and behavioural problems so the doctor recommended omega 3.

My youngest is 8 months old and still having a lot of breast milk so I wouldn't supplement. I don't think many under ones would need it. After all breast milk or formula - they both contain lots of vitamins and minerals so it could do more harm than good in the end. Even over the age of one, I found it's easier to get really young children to eat healthily. The fussiness didn't start for my eldest at least until he was at nursery and copying other children.

I give my 3 and 4yr olds a gummy vitamin that's meant for their ages. They don't contain iron and I think they don't even contain calcium (my kids get enough anyway). At their last check up though they were a little anemic so they are on iron now perscribed by their dr with a dose safe for them. My oldest is a really good eater, but my 3yr old isn't.

Experts disagree about toddlers and vitamins.

The only concern would be giving your child too many supplements.

A daily multivitamin, especially designed for children, should be fine.

once upon a time there were food shortages. Not at the moment. If you have a good eater and you are giving her all the right food groups, why should she need extra? Just a waste of money.

If your kid is eating well, is active and generally healthy, I wouldn't include vitamins, don't see need for it. You could take your kid to get general blood test to see the values of iron, for example, and then if some value isn't in normal range, then add vitamins. Other way, really don't see reason for it.

I don't give it to my kids.

    My doctor recommended it.
