will a tub of butter expire if it has never been opened?

Amy, it's fine kiddo, I buy loads of butter when on special, specially down in Platsburg.

Fat is a preservative so your butter will last a looooong time. The only time I've ever had butter go bad was because the company did a poor job in rinsing the whey out of the butter before shaping it. And it was the whey that grew hair - not the butter itself. So if the company that did your tub did it correctly, then it can last longer than 6 months.

In fact, when I grew up, my mother kept the butter on a plate in the cupboard - not the refrigerator. It never ever grew hair or turned green or anything. She still does that to this day and she's now 88 yrs old.

You can use it, as long as it hasn't been opened AT ALL! Just use it quickly. And the label says when the store has to sell it by, not when you have to use it by!
