How do I start watching Doctor Who?

Really, having all the backstory isn't super important in Doctor Who. If you start with the most recent season you wouldn't have too hard a time. However I would suggest starting with the first season of the "new" show, with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor.

Trying to watch it in sequence from the first episode would be difficult, since the original show was very spottily preserved. I would say watch the modern version, and then if you want to go back and catch up as possible you can go from there.

Something I've been meaning to do to since a lot of people are worshiping it now. It's gone one for a load of seasons centered around 11 doctors all the way from the 1960s, so I guess it's up to you to just read the wikipedia page on the general outline up until a Season that's not too old that you'd want to start watching it from (maybe the 9th doctor-11th doctor seasons since they went from 2005-present, considering the 8th doctor's season was back in 1996). The reading can create anticipation for the TV series, who knows, if you're bored you can watch a couple of eps from the old seasons you didn't watch as well...

It's better to buy the TV series DVD/Blu Ray box sets if you can be bothered patiently watching the series online which would be a tedious task(Just watching one episode of any TV series is frustrating online unless you have a good connection I guess).

They do a good job making sure that every season starts out with a kind of fresh start so new people joining can understand. It's a great show, so I hope you enjoy it where ever you start! :D
