windpump- vacuum or pump?
Saw Aermotor windpump. They are supposed to be able to pump water from hundreds of feet, right? Do they push water down into a well, then you use the water that comes up? Or can a mechanical pump actually suck water a vertical few hundred feet? Of course they work- they've been used for hundreds of years. It's just that I thought there was a limit of 50 feet or so that you could suck water vertically. Thanks!

The pump is placed down into the water. It can then pump the water upward.

The pump pushes the water up, as "big daddy" said, the pump is at the bottom of the well, mechanically driven from the surface by a sucker rod. The pump it is neither a jet pump nor a suction pump.
Also, the maximum suction lift is around 30 rather than 50 ft. but you are correct that it is much less than "hundreds" of feet

As long as you can "prime" the suction hose attached to the pump (by filling it with water, assuming there is a one-way foot valve at the bottom), then piston pumps can lift water hundreds of feet.
