i had a rotator cuff, biceps tendon release, and distal clavicle excision back in December, and the best remedy for the pain that worked for me was an ice pack pump machine (cold water and ice kept in a cooler attached to an ice pack ,circulated via a pump in the cooler.) the colder that I could get my shoulder the better it felt, as for speeding the healing process, there isnt much you can do depending on which procedeure that you had, in some cases the surgeon has to attach tendons and tissues to your bones, so any type of movement that they dont approve(physical therapists) can endanger a possible tear of the repair.....trust me...lol....I asked at every therapy session if I could move more, or take the annoying a#$ sling off lol! if you follow the program it wont take long at all for a noticible improvement......good luck, and happy healing

heat and ice probably wouldn't hurt, just make sure not to do too much at a time (20 minute intervals with 20 minute breaks).
light stretches and exercises are probably good, but don't do too much.
did the doctor recommend you go to physical therapy? that will be the best thing for you.
they'll do measurements (how far you can bend your arm and stuff) and then give you exercises that you can do a few times a day.
i would go there.
good luck! :)
