Ultrega shifter failure on a new shifter?
I just bought a new bike 2 weeks ago from bikes Direct. Yesterday when I was riding the front shifter refused to down shift. I was checking it out when this piece fell out. The exploded view on the Shimano site doesn't show anything. Anyone know if the shops take shifters apart and repair them. I am not going to touch it and already set a letter and photo to customer support. I can't find anything on the web. The shifter seemed a little sloppy from the start.
Bikes Direct sent me a email and they shipped out a new shifter this morning. I can replace it myself with no problems. The shifter felt sloppy from the beginning it wasn't lose in any way it just wasn't crisp when shifting. They are sending a shipping label with so I only have to put the old one in and send it back.

In general, Shimano shifters can't be rebuilt. Contact Bikes Direct about their warranty policy. After them, contact Shimano. If they send you a new shifter and you bring your bike to a local shop to get it installed, you should expect to pay for their labor because you didn't buy the shifter from them.
FWIW, your experience is unusual. I've had Ultegra shifters on two different bikes and never had a problem with them.

I would go into my local bike shop and have them take a look at it. I am no expert in repairing shifters, but the only company that I know that makes re-build-able shifters is Campy.
The shop may be able to assist you in getting a replacement for an improperly built shifter from Shimano. I would also email both Bikes,Direct and Shimano. I think Shimano is based in Irvine Ca, for the USA. They may direct you to a local bike shop for a look see....

Was the shifter installed correctly on the bar? That little piece looks like it could be the nut that holds the pinch bolt and band taught against the bar. If the bar was still wrapped up correctly, it may not be entirely obvious, but it would be hard to shift without proper resistance against the cable. That could happen if the shifter wasn't properly secured to the bar, so it was moving just enough to fudge up shifting.

those things are as complicated as swiss watches
no way would i take it apart
idk what that piece is
and i have taken them apart [older 600 anyway]
i;d immediately write to them and say look, it never worked right, a piece fell out, now it quit
oh you did that
good luck
you will also be out the considerable time or labor involved to change cables, rewrap bars, adjust things etc etc even if they send you a new one
