Im getting an error when trying to copy a dvd?

Hi All,

Im trying to burn/copy a dvd its not a movie or anything. Actually its a memorial video of my grandmothers recent funeral services, Im trying to make copies to send to relatives who were unable to attend. I have a dell computer windows vista with a dvd-rw drive. Im supposed to load my grands dvd in the top and the blank in the bottom but when I do this I get this error that says to insert a blank dvd into the drive and the drawer opens ...but there is a blank dvd in the drive already. I then thought well maybe one of my blanks are bad so I tried another and its giving me the same error to insert a blank dvd. Im wondering is it saying this because my blanks are dvd-r and not dvd-rw could that be the problem?

Ok, first off, the type of dvd(-r/+r/-rw/+rw) is irrelevant.

They normally hold the same amount of data(4.7GB) unless they are dual layer(9.5), or blue ray(20+)

Second the general cause of this type of error is either a bad disc(or stack), or a bad burner.

    I'd try this first.

Insert a blank disc in the burner, if you are using vista or 7, then a pop up should appear asking what you want to do with said disc(unless it is turned off), just click cancel.

Just put any data on a blank disc(you can use it as a back up disc for files).

If you are using nero, it's just a drag and drop operation.(if you are using something else, try amending your question to include the particular program, so those of us out here can give you a better idea).

If that doesn't work, then i'd say the drive is possibly gone.

If it does than look at the meter on the original disc to see how much data is on it.

It may be a dual layer, and have more data than the discs you are wanting to use can hold.

    just a couple suggestions.

Make sure the destination drive is actually a DVD, not a CD writer.

You should be able to copy the DVD to an image file, then burn it on the same DVD you read from (after ejecting, and putting in a blank)

ypu cant because of the fact of copyright rules. thats why they have those copyright monitors arise at first of flicks. you wont have the means to get around the copyright ingredient on the tape to make it a dvd and in case you have been able to its unlawful
