What is an "unclosed slip knot"?
Hi everyone!
I found this crochet pattern for baby boots and it asks you to start with an "unclosed slip knot". Can anyone tell me what that is? I know what a slip knot is but not what is meant by "unclosed"? Does that just mean that I don't pull it closed? Or is that some fancy technique I've never heard of?
No, it's not a magic ring. I thought so too at first but here's what it says in the pattern:
Sole:
4.0mm hook, white worsted yarn, approx. 18 m for 1 sole with sides (36m for both)
Make an unclosed slip knot and chain 12, turn.
R1. sk 1 lp, sl st next 6 sts, sc next 5 sts, 3 sc in next st (which is the unclosed slip knot), pivot 180 degrees, sc next 5 sts over the knot tail, sl st next 6 sts, join rd with sl st. (26 sts) (pull the tail snug if it has loosened up)
Work hook through both front and back loops of previous row until further notice.

I think they mean what is commonly referred to today as an adjustable or magic ring. It is a way for starting a circular piece of crochet but without making a ring of chains or working into a single chain.
If this piece is worked in the round, then the adjustable ring technique is as good (or maybe better) than any other way to start crochet in the round. Here are some instructions:

If it is not worked in the round, please include the first two lines of the pattern to help me orient on the construction method.
ETA:
With the further information, I now agree with the other answerer. Make your slip knot loosely, leaving room between the strands of the knot to insert the hook into the center of it as if it was a chain stitch, rather than snugging it up to make a sliding noose.

Looks to me like you simply don't pull the slip knot tight, so that it can be used as if it is a chain stitch. i'm not totally sure, but that's what it looks like to me. also, since it's so small, you could try it either way and see which you like better. Patterns are just what worked for someone else, doesn't mean you have to follow it exactly/perfectly...
