What is the origin of the term "rolling pin"?
I have come across all manner of descriptions of the origin of the thing itself, but have been unable to discover why it is termed a pin. Why, for example, is it not a rolling stick or a rolling rod?

One of the meanings of 'pin' is, in fact, stick. But it also means a rotational axis, as in 'axle pin', which is probably why it is used for this term. The rotating roller type with handles at both ends is more common than the simple rod type of rolling pin.
