Does anybody know why the media keeps wrongfully stating that Whitey Bulger influenced "The Departed"?
I know most Americans have little knowledge of the Hong Kong film industry (2nd largest in the world), but why doesn't the media tell the real story which is that "The Departed" is actually a direct remake of a superior Hong Kong film called "Infernal Affairs"? William Monahan (Departed screenwriter) even stated there was no connection between Bulger and Jack Nicholson's character in an interview in the dvd extras.
Does anybody know why this false comparison exists other than Bulger was from Boston where the film was set?

Actually you are a little off here. While you are correct that the film was indeed based on the Hong Kong film, Scorcece twisted it a little. Frank Costello is not supposed to be Whitey Bulger exactly, but he is absolutley inspired by him. Scorcece during an interview said he based his character off inspirations to whitey.

I think it was just hype to get you to see the movie. I am from the Boston area originally and I kept wondering why they implied that Jack Nicholson's character was Whitey Jimmy Bulger.

I believe that Nicholson's character may not have been based on Bulger but as a little influenced from him. Do to the fact that Bulger was known for his "Irish Temper" and being in control.
