is mono fishing line and leader fishing line the same thing?

Is there a difference between the two or can a length of mono fishing line be used as a leader. Wondering if 'mono leader line' is just lengths of normal line packaged and sold at very inflated prices.

Yes, monofilament leader is the same stuff as monofilament line, and yes it is sold in shorter lengths (10-50 yards or so, I think.) They also sell fluorocarbon leader, which is more expensive, but much more nearly invisible underwater.

And yes, it is sold at a higher price per yard in the shorter lengths. It's sold that way mainly for people who use heavier mono or braided line as their main line and may never need a full spool of line of that strength. If you have a bulk spool of the size of line you want to use as a leader, go ahead and use it. But don't buy a bulk spool expecting to use it for the rest of your life, because monofilament does degrade after a few years.

The word "monofilament" simply means literally "single strand".

Any line comprising a single strand is therefore monofilament, although it may be be made from a variety of materials, some of which are more expensive than others.

Braid is made up from a number of strands, which is why it has a more cotton-like appearance.

Leaders are simply the last few feet of line at the business end of your fishing setup (excluding the hooklink itself). People use leaders for a variety of reasons. The leader material may have properties that are best utilised sparingly. Fluorocarbon for example is virtually invisible in water, but is also very expensive and is also thick and lacking in flexibility when compared to some other materials, which would make a reel full of the stuff more difficult to cast. Sometimes people also use "shock" leaders, which are short lengths of very strong line designed to take the strain of casting heavy weights whilst leaving a lighter grade of line on the rest of the reel.

You can use any material as a leader if it has properties that you only want to use in small amounts near your hook. Remember that at the end of the day it is only the last few inches of your rig that the fish are likely to see or experience.

When we anglers refer to 'mono' we mean 'nylon monofilament' line. Leaders can be made out of this, but they don't have to be - they could be fluorocarbon or even wire for example.

For more on leaders, including tapered leaders and wind-on leaders, have a look at http://www.go-saltwater-fishing.com/fishing-leader...

Where mono is sold as leader line, it won't be the ordinary 'stretchy' mono you put on your reel - it will be stiffer with less stretch. It's intended for surfcasting primarily, where a stretchy leader would absorb the caster's energy rather than powering up the rod, and would result in a shorter cast.

Hope this helps. Tight lines, er, leaders.

There are three types of fishing line. Monofilament, braid, and fluorocarbon.

You can cut your own leaders from spools of line. I have never heard of buying pre cut segments of line.

I have used fluorocarbon on my spinning reels for years. It has never really given me a problem. I have used braided in clear water and when i switched to fluorocarbon my catch rate skyrocketed. That said my dad uses braided in dirty water and he has no problems catching fish. I like fluorocarbon and i don't think that you will have a problem as long as you don't overspool.
