Please help me with my exam!?

Hi! I am from Austria and I have a test in 4 hours. Please can you help me:

It´s about banking; My question: There is an account called checking account. What does that mean? Is that a card were you can (only) make withdraws from the ATM/ your account, or a "checking book" where you have a small book (check) you can pay in a store with?

In Austria Checks are not usual (that´s why I have no idea ;-))

Thank you for your help

Update:

That means there is NO checking account in GB? Only in america?

Update 2:

How do you call your ATM?

In America, a checking account means that the bank holds the money for you. So simply speaking, you go to a bank and tell them you want to deposit one hundred then they'll take it and it remains in your account in the bank. The withdraw machine in America is called an ATM machine...and yes you do put your card in there. A checking book contains checks which are different from ATM card. A check, the paper thing, you would write to a store and they would take it there and they would take money from your account. An ATM is electronic, so they move your money to the store electronically. All these is from America so I don't know if it's the same or not. Good luck.
