Different eye color question?

Since we inherit our genes from our parents, I've met a few people in which both of their parents had brown eyes. Yet, they themselves either had green or blue eyes. I think to myself, how is that possible?

Green and blue eyes are recessive traits. Meaning both parents could be a carrier for let's say, blue eyes, but the gene for brown eyes is masking the gene for blue eyes (since it is dominant).

So there's a 25% chance for the child to have blue/green eyes if the parents both have brown eyes. Hope this clears things up for you!

The parents are heterozygous, that is, they carry alleles for both eye colors. Since the brown eye color is dominant over green or blue, we cannot see that until they have children that happen to be homozygous recessive.
