Lots of scripts end with something like a death or maybe an old man looking back on his life. The story is about how someone got to this ending in the first place. In Romeo and Juliet, starting the play knowing they die adds real poignancy to the power of their love. At times they are so young, pretty, handsome, with everything to live for - yet we know they die, because fate has marked them as star crossed - so how did it happen? Where did it go wrong for them when they had so much to live for? I really want to watch this and find out - that's all Shakespeare was doing. It's a powerful theatrical trick still used today, think about the opening of Titanic, which similarly starts at the end of a woman's life and then we learn about her young love - but what happened between her being young and in love, and obviously surviving the Titanic. Because we already know the Titanic is destroyed, the emphasis shifts to which of the good and bad characters survived, and how. We should especially care for the leads as they seem to have everything to look forward to, love and happiness.

To be fair, Shakespeare rarely starts his plays at the end, so it's not like he was always doing it.

    As in which play?

Anyhow, the purpose of watching a play isn't always to find out what happens next but to see how the action unfolds. If you already know the outcome, you concentrate on the manner of the telling and the language--surely also legitimate pleasures and ones a playwright might want to his audience to focus on.
