There are two culprits to this.

    1. The so called Traders in the stock exchange who buy and sell oil, only on paper, and who jump at any old excuse to say that such and such an event will cause an oil shortage thereby creating a price rise at the pumps. These people are leeches sucking every bit of profit without actually producing or manufacturing anything. Just buying and selling commodities and in turn it is they who not only create the problem but who also benefit from it.

    2. Our Governments over the last 30 odd years who have continually raised the level of tax on every litre we buy. At present it is 72%. Just think, for every £100 of fuel you buy £72 of it is tax.

Petrol will go up higher and higher, and they know we will keep on forking out - many of us need our cars after all. We may grumble and moan about it, but at the end of the day we will go without something else to pay the petrol costs if need be. Many of us are dependant on our cars, so no choice.

It won't be that long before we all sit here and say 'remember the good old days when petrol was £1.40 a litre?' as we fork out for a litre which costs £4.99. It will surely happen!

Our government knows we have to use our vehicles for travel. That is because all these private public transport firms they sold off are subsidised by the taxpayer so they keep the shareholders in them happy with the increasing dividends. That means we are trapped in a situation by a load of shysters we elect to our government on a continual basis and they do what they do because it keep the party funds being paid into by these so-called private subsidised firms. They give foreign aid to countries who are building space programs and nuclear weapons for war while we pay the price and take the cuts this lot force on us. They don't take any cuts and just reap the rewards this so called trade the foreign aid gives back to those businesses the politicians have an interest in here in the UK.

Would it be better and more apt to rename our MPs position and careers "rip off artist extraordinaire" instead of politician. Seems so. They certainly don't represent the working man/woman or average citizen of the UK.

As long as the Government pay money to Pakistan,China,India etc. and get involved in wars, they will need to tax things and petrol is an easy target.

Walk more. Share cars more. Not ideal or what we are accustomed to but certainly the way to go. One thing's for sure: the price of fuel is never going to reduce.

we'll all keep paying it even if it's £2.50 a litre or more! the government knows this so will continue to take the p out of us.

Outrageous isn't it? Even worse, my greedy boss who refuses to give us extra for travel.

Aslong as the greedy crooks want it too go up it will go up.
