Do you need a title for a boat trailer.?

I am going to sell my sailboat and cant find the title for the trailer.

Update:

I just called the DMV for Ohio, you don't need a title for a trailer that weighs less then 4,000 lbs.

Go to the dnr, that's where you register boats at,if you had it registered before you can get a copy,if you never had it registered, bring a receipt you can still get it registered, then you will have a title for your trailer, and you can sell it,some people don't care if you have it,and some do,you will need a title if the boat weighs so much, look it up on line !

Yes, you'll need the "Title" for the trailer to properly sell the trailer. Without the "Title" the buyer is screwed. You need to obtain a "Duplicate Title" for the trailer before you can LEGALLY sell it. Go to the Licensing Agency to apply for a Duplicate Title and pay the fees. you should have within 10 days to 1 month depending on the agency. You'll want everything in order for a smooth transition of ownership. You DON'T want the buyer to be suing you in Court for "Misrepresentation" or "Fraud".

Whoever buys the trailer will need the title to get it registered and get liscence plates for it. It should be on you to request a new title from the Dept. of Motor Vehicles so that it can get transferred properly. The new owner won't be able to request the title since it will be in your name.

From experience in MA requesting a title for a car took just about 3 or 4 weeks from the time I requested it to when it came in the mail.

So long story short, yes you do need the title to prove that you are the current owner and can legally transfer ownership.

the easiest way to handle the transfer of ownership is go to the DMV with the new owners.

that way you will be able to apply for a lost title and do the title change at the same time. when the replacement title is issued it will be issued in the new owners name.

    hope this helps

Yes. You will need it to convey title to the trailer. You can get a duplicate title from the DMV...it's not a difficult process.

    Good Luck!
