'64 F-100 won't start- can you advise?

Problem began a few days ago- turn the key, heard a click and the radio went lower, but no cranking. Then a couple of days of no problems. Thought the clicking was from the starter solenoid. Got a new solenoid, no change. Ran a jumper cable from the hot wire on the starter to the positive terminal of the battery and Voila! The motor started. (Had the key to "on" of course) .... I don't think it's the starter because it cranks and starts when I hotwire it. I don't think it's the solenoid because the new one does the same as the old one.

Anyone had similar troubles? How'd you make it work??

Update:

Got a new battery before I started. The terminals are good. Any other possibilities??

if 8it cranks when you basically run a power wire to the s terminal, but not with the switch, then the switch or the neutral safety or clutch safety switch is the problem. it could also be the ignition switch or the wiring between but i have to agree with you that the starter is still good. i have used a single piece of decent gauge wire and just go from the wire that goes to that relay from the battery positive to the s terminal on that relay. that usually gets the relay to click over.

Ignition switch. The position or terminal contact inside the switch from the on to start position is melted, burned, or worn to the point that it shorts out from bridged contact. Even new switches can do this if they have a rare manufacturing defect. I would get a new switch and go from there if the problem persists.

did you replace the solenoid on the fender . if so need see if get power to the lil wire going to it while key is in start position. if its not then need check ignition swich or look for a broke wire

Dirty, loose, or corroded battery connections.

Remove and clean the terminals and posts.
