Could an Axolotl really regrow limbs and how long does it take?
I've heard that Axolotl have an astonishing ability to regenerate injuries and could even regrow lost limbs... is that true? Could they really regenarate... let's say a missing foot?
And if yes, how long would it take the foot to regrow?
(No I do NOT have an Axolotl and I do NOT want to test it!)

Salamanders can indeed regenerate limbs. Since axolotls are salamanders, they too can regenerate limbs. As for how long it will take, it will depend on how much food the salamander can find, and the ambient temperature, since amphibians are ecotherms and since they have a lower metabolic rate in cool weather.
Under optimal conditions inside the laboratory, it generally takes about a month to 3 months for the lost limb to be regrown. Under natural conditions, it may take longer.

The Water Dragon (Axolotl) is also neoteric, that means that it doesn't routinely undergo metamorphosis from the larval to adult form, as happens with most other salamanders. Instead, the Water Dragon (Axolotl) stays in the larval form (neoteric) with gills and becomes sexually mature and reproduces in the neoteric state. Water Dragon (Axolotl) live their entire lives in water.
The Water Dragon (Axolotl) has amazing regenerative abilities if they are injured or if they lose a body part i.e. leg, tail or toe; the Water Dragon (Axolotl) will regenerate that lost part in usually about 10 weeks. Because Axolotls have the ability to regenerate lost body parts, the Water Dragon is one of the most studied animals in the world today.
The link below is an excellent source of information regarding the regenerative abilities of the Water Dragon (Axolotl).

Water Dragons (Axolotls) are hardy creatures that can live up to 15 years with the proper attention to the water quality. They can grow up to 12 inches. Weight is from 2 to 8 oz.
At Buy-Axolotls.com we do not recommend that you handle your Water Dragon because their skeleton structure is very fragile, so please use a net carefully, when handling your Water Dragons. Adults and Juveniles Water Dragons have lungs like us and "Breath the Air" so they can survive outside of water for short periods, as long as their skin is wet and not allowed to dry.
Juvenile Water Dragons (axolotl) younger than 1 year old will be cannibalistic towards each other, so it is best raise them in separate tanks. Adults that are over 1 year old can be housed together. Water Dragons (Axolotl) will grow out of this cannibalistic stage when they reach 1 year old. However, should you buy a Juvenile that has been raised with other Juveniles durring the cannibalistic stage; then they will be cannibalistic for the rest of its life (this is a learned and remembered behavior). Always look for Water Dragons that have been raised in separate tanks during the cannibalistic stage.
