how do i get a new social security card re-issued to me?

I do taxes and have to sign all of my preparer identification in my first married name....i have been doing this for the past 6 years because my first married name is what the social security administration has on file. However, i have been divorced from my first husband for almost 10 years.

I recently lost my social security card (which has my first married name on it) and I cannot apply for a re-issue without some sort of identification documents showing my first husband's last name. (when we got married the ONLY document I changed was my social security card. I even kept my drivers license in my maiden name this entire time).

That being said, with absolutely no other documents available with the same last name as my social security card I am not able to get a card re-issued, much less change my name back to my maiden name on the card so I do not a) have to be reminded every year during tax season of my putrid ex-husband, and b) get all of my names to match so I do not feel like I have soooo many aliases.

PLEASE tell me there is someway to fix this without having to contact an attorney. All of my personal documentation is in different names (i.e my maiden name, my first married name-ONLY my social card- and now my second married name) I would love to be able to get EVERYTHING in one same last name....my maiden name. Someone please help. Thanks

Don't you have a birth certificate in your maiden name, and a marriage license in your first married name? If not, get them from the state. You can then show a chain of names with documentation that should suffice.

It is NOT illegal to use different names for different IDs unless your intent is fraud. My husband's SS card showed "Dick" since he was 12 years old, and everything else shows Richard. I use my middle name (maiden name) on driver's licenses and applications but omit it when signing checks, for instance. This isn't illegal, it's simply shorter. Your name can be anything you want as long as your intent is not fraudulent.

You'd better discuss it with Social Security. Public records should be available from whatever jurisdiction you were (first) married in. You hate the "putrid" last name yet did nothing for 10 years? Sorry, but this situation is of your creation.

You realize this is 100% ILLEGAL in EVERY state. You need to consult a CRIMINAL defense attorney about resolving your ongoing ID FRAUD. You can have ONLY one legal name at any given time, and ALL your government issued ID must use your legal name.
