IMHO, it's a short-term gimmick, like all the other 3D iterations that have come and gone since the 1950s. The problems are:
1. Those glasses. Some day they may not be needed, but doing that comfortably and easily is not yet on the drawing board.
2. The TV screen has to display two separate images for 3D, meaning that all the pixels are not used to make one maximum-resolution image.
3. There is little 3D programming available now. That could grow in time, but its not an endorsement for buying a 3D set today. Besides, the vast library of old movies and TV productions was filmed in 2D and will continue to be broadcast indefinitely.
4. A significant percentage of the population cannot experience 3D because you have to have perfectly balanced vision in both eyes. Many people don't even know they have a dominant-eye problem until they look through those 3D glasses and wonder what the big deal is.
Bottom line: the best investment today is a very good conventional TV with the most upscale features you can afford. If 3D TV is going to defy history and actually take hold permanently as a mainstream media format, you should wait for that to really happen. Right now, that's by no means a sure bet.

IMO, they're a very expensive fad that will die off. The movie Avatar spawned all this 3D hoopla, but there is really very little content available now. There is also a very real phenomenon that can give many people headaches after extended viewing. In the real world, as we focus on an object moving toward us, our eyes turn inward. In a movie, however, the screen is always at the same distance from us. This creates a visual confusion that leads to headaches for some people. There are a couple of great articles on problems with 3D movies at

Also, I'd get a plasma, not an LCD/LED. I made the mistake of getting an LCD set and the viewing angle limitations are driving me crazy. Black level performance is also much better on plasmas, and they're cheaper at big sizes.

Bad idea if you are under 21. They can really damage your eyes (Have you ever been to a 3D movie and you get a headache after awhile?) If you have a child it is also a bad idea. It might not hurt your eyes, but over all, it`s a bad idea. It is a waste of money, and they don`t really make a difference. When you go to a 3D movie, and most parts don`t look 3D, just really clear.... Well, it will most likely be like that. I would just stick with a regular television.
