Could someone please explain why free advice in the UK is so costly?

DVLA offers free advice to drivers. However, calls cost a staggering £1.53 per minute plus network extras. How can such an exorbitant cost be justified?

It's because the number on the link is nothing to do with the DVLA, it's a private company running a for-profit website, it says so at the bottom. That phone line is how they make their money, giving out advice that is available for free from the DVLA. Probably it's a legal requirement for the website to make this clear, I'm not sure.

If you want to phone the DVLA at normal rates go to this website.

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/contactus.aspx

It has all the info there for telephoning the call centre in Swansea or finding your local office and phoning them at 03 number rates, which are set at the usual national rate. Even if you phone from your mobile these calls cost the same as a call to a normal landline.

The website you've linked to and the phone number on there relate to some private company trying to swindle people into phoning their expensive money-making scheme. Check out the small print

"Please note that DVLAGUIDE.CO.UK is not owned, operated, or affiliated with any government agency. DVLAGUIDE.CO.UK (the site) is a privately owned, for-profit web site. The Site specifically disclaims any and all connection with any The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or any division, or any government agency. DVLAGUIDE.CO.UK does its best to get the correct information on its site but does not claim responsibility for the accuracy of the information displayed. It is not complete or certified information. Additionally, the website expressly disclaims any and all liability for third party links or resources on the site and any claims of negligence arising from same. For official information, please consult The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency."

So they're not responsible for any info on their website and also for any info provided by third party links (like the telephone number they've provided) and if you want official information to please contact the DVLA. So it's a scam and everyone should do as they say and just phone the official DVLA instead.

Get in your car, take a bus, or walk down to your local DVLA and ask the questions in person. It will be free then.
