calisthenics every other day would burn calories and you won't need as much equipment or time.

    Look at these 2 videos:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1Uc86SH6h4

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-6JM8VA9m0

To do push-ups, look at this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtCQB1IHtBc

Start with the "kneeling-version/box-push-up". Start with 6-push, 15-seconds rest, 6-push, 15 seconds rest, 6-push. Rest 1 minute. Then another 6-15-6-15-6. Another 1 minute rest, then 6-15-6-15-6. For week 1, do 3 sets of 6-15-6-15-6 every other day, 3 days a week.

    For week 2, do 3 sets 8-15-8-15-8-15, rest 1 minute, then a 4th set of 8-15-8-15-8-10..

For week 3, do 3 sets (four sets) 10-15-10-15-10, then a 4th set of 10-15-10-15-14.

For week 4.... do the regular push-ups (starting with 3 sets of 6-15-6-16-5).

You don't need any equipment or need to know how to do push ups from the floor. Put on your favorite music and dance all over the house. You can do pushups by standing arm's length from the wall, bending your arms, and lertting your body slowly lean into the wall; then use your arms to push yourself upright again. It works and is great fun. Don't get caught up in laying out a lot of money for something you will probably use for a month or two and put in a corner for a clothes hanger.

With the basic understanding that 3500 calories taken in or worked out represent the gain or loss of a pound, you need to weight that against your body's basal metabolic rate.

Go here to figure out your BMR and then follow their links to a few other calculators to figure out exactly what your body needs. http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/bmr-f...

Even laying on the couch watching tv 24/7, we expend a certain number of calories just on our vital process. You'll figure out how many calories a day are required to run your body.

If you need 2,000 calories a day just to breath and blink and talk and reach for the remote, eating 2,000 calories a day you won't gain or lose an ounce.

Add 500 calories worth of cookies every day, and stay on that couch. In a week's time, 500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 additional calories, and a pound gained. But cut out 500 calories and the same 500 x 7 days is your caloric deficit. You LOST a pound this week

    BUT LET'S RAMP IT UP.

Get off the couch. Walk or jog or run (or work your way from the first to the second to the third over the next weeks and months). A half hour of brisk, arms-a-flailing walking is good for 250 calories. You'll get even more out of riding a bike or climbing and descending and reclimbing a flight of stairs. No gym required.

But guess what? Just like cutting out 500 calories of cookies... WORKING out those 500 calories produces the same weight loss.

Once you figure out your base metabolic rate, you'll see you have much more wiggle room because you are probably taking in way more than necessary.

Now on to your exercise question: Keep it simple. Calisthenics as another respondent offered, are AMAZING. Look at the bodies in the movie "300" -- ancient warriors and olympic athletes in Greece did NOT hit the YMCA before competing. They had their own bodies and the objects around them to use as exercise equipment. A few "no muss/no fuss" suggestions can be found at Lance Armstrong's site: http://www.livestrong.com/fitness/ -- you can find easy exercises without equipment for EVERY body part. And just look around you for inspriation. When I starred in "Bye Bye Birdie" before going onstage shirtless every night I had one sweet little girl in the chorus who gladly and dutifully made it a part of her ritual every night to come over to me in the wings so I could lay her across my arms and raise and lower her to pump up my arms.

Yes... you need to do pushups. Or lay on your back and push something heavy away from you. The key is pushing away uses the chest muscles. Your body is the best thing to use as weight because then you're just, you know... pushing THE FLOOR away.

BUT YOU CAN CHEAT. WORK UP TO THEM! Numbers don't matter. Don't say "I have to do 100 pushups today." Screw that. Say "I have to do ONE pushup today" and do it. If you need to, don't do a perfect plank position, with hands on the floor and feet on the floor. Do it with hands and KNEES on the floor. Once you've accomplished several this way, for several days, switch to the tradition feet position. Keep that but in line. No arching, no drooping. A mirror helps but eventually you learn what it feels like AND USE THAT CORE TO KEEP IT TIGHT. Also keeps your butt shapely. Lots of stuff at work here, I'm telling you.

Anyway do one pushup. Then when that's a piece of cake do two. Then do five. The number that counts is BEATING YOUR PERSONAL BEST. You're in a huge competition here. Not against me, or the guy on that soap opera who can never seem to find a shirt. BUT WITH YOURSELF. You win no matter what AS LONG AS YOU ENTER THE RACE!

I'm 44 years old. I weigh 165, at 6 feet high. I have a 29" waist. My chest is 42" and my arm is 14.5". I eat a diet rich in lean proteins, leafy greens, and limited sugars, only whole-grain carbs (in short supply as well) and very VERY little fat -- almost none from animal sources. I weight train and do cardio daily in the gym and have trained others to, as we like to call it, "reclaim their inner porn star." As I said with my "competition with yourself" rant above, the goal should be to walk naked past... not your spouse... not some stranger... not some web cam... but a mirror that only you can see... and your own reaction should be "yeah, I'd hop on THAT!"

    That's when you win.

And the reason you should listen to me is not the stuff I just said. It's the stuff I would have HAD to say 6 years ago: I was 275 pounds with a 46" waist. I don't know any other measurements from then because nobody, especially me, ever cared to look. I was depressed and medicated and sad. AND IF I CAN MAKE SUCH A CHANGE, ANYBODY IN THE WORLD can do whatever he or she wants in the way of fitness. Good luck and let us know your progress!
