First, you need to define "extremely tough". If you are implying that because sailors are on ships at sea and away from land mines, IEDs, enemy soldiers, wild animals, outdoor conditions, don't carry a weapon and wear combat boots then I could see where you might be coming from. However, this would still be a false assumption.

The military is about sacrifice. No matter the branch, you are held accountable for your actions and behavior at all times. You are expected to do what you are told when you are told to do it. This includes going overseas and being away from loved ones in harsh conditions or cramped, uncomfortable conditions. Being on ship for a six month - or longer - deployment is not very comfortable. The crews work very long hours and are expected to be top-notch and alert. The deck of an aircraft carrier is one of the most dangerous work environments in the world. Often, there is nothing glamorous in the work which sailors are expected to perform.

Prostitution in the Navy is very much frowned upon. Long gone are the days when officers had their own brothels in ports of call, and enlisted sailors had their own brothels. Any sailor caught visiting such a place faces strict penalties.

I have a friend, Harvey Greatrex, who's father was in the navy, and I can tell you for sure that he was without a doubt one of the toughest people I know, and had a lot of respect for his wife. I am extremely confident that he never interacted with a prostitute, and he did on many occasions tell us about what things were like in the navy.

So, basically, I think that they are tough.
