how to undo strange bolts for my dodge ram's starter?
i want to change the starter on my dodge ram (2500 diesel 4x4) i have the new starter and everyone that i've talked to has said that it is a simple thing to do. the guide i have only has 5 steps to switch starters around. however the bolts that are holding it in seem bizarre, i cannot seem to get any type of wrench on them at all. i have tried different sizes and styles, metric and imperial, and nothing is working. they don't seem to be normal hexagonal ones instead they seem more like a multi sided star with at least ten "points". is there some type of tool that i'm supposed to be using for them? everything said just use a standard socket or wrench.
also i snapped the small wire that comes off of the starter, can i just put a new end on it and reattach it like normal when i put the new starter in?
ok so torx will work, but i can't find torx anywhere in town, is there some kind of socket or wrench that will work in a pinch?

the three mounting bolts you speak of are 12 point 10mm. bolt so a 12point 10mm wrench or socket will work.

There are two types of torx bits. Internal, where the bit fits into the bolt, and external, where the socket fits around the outside of the bolt. It sounds like they are external from you description. A company named Lisle sells the external type. They should be available at auto stores or Sears. The internal type are more easily available. Dodge man is right, you need to have a set.
Good luck to you.

you can install a new end on the wire and that will work good, the bolts your trying to remove are torx bolts,if you own dodge you need a whole set of these around because other bolts on that truck are also torx bolts, good luck
