Definitely do it if you're going to be away for awhile.
I lost a ton and that's when I found www.gamegiftcard.net to get $10 at a time in "free" game card activation codes. "Free" in quotes because it's not really free you have to earn it by spending time on taking surveys (like "want car insurance?") and actions (like "make bing your default search engine"). Takes about 10 minutes to earn the 15 points you need for a $10 gift card that you get and then redeem within the game. You can get up to 6 free activations (that's when I maxed out anyway).
