Question about syntax (with some extra LotR!)?
I'll have my first Grammar class tomorrow (from my German uni) and I heard the other course talked about syntax with an extract from The Lord of the Rings.
Why is the sentence "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit" grammatically (!) better than "There lived a hobbit in a hole in the ground".
The emphasis is on the aspect of grammar not style.

Well, both are technically correct. The first is better due to the fact that the prepositional phrases are closer to the verb they're modifying. The second version has a separate idea, a hobbit, in between the modifiers and the verb.
