Riding a bike with clips?

I have googled clipping in and out and I figured maybe I could do it. After reviewing videos and watching how to do it I thought maybe I could do it. So I decided to take the bike out and try it WELL I fell twice. I don't know what im doing wrong when I approach a stop I get nervous and try tugging my foot, well I did try lowering my heel and twisting out but something didn't work right. Looking for all tips and suggestions. Plz don't suggest going back to pedals Im not going to do that I'm going to master this thing ( btw yes, I do spin but spinning on a stationary bike and the real thing are two totally different things)...and another thing Im trying to also learn how to ride standing up no luck with that either it feels like Im about to fall over, any tips would be appreciated thanks....ouch my thumb is still hurting from that last fall (so embarrassing)

Update:

Really Lance? wow I couldnt even imagine a pro like him falling even in his younger days. Im glad you mentioned not to put heel all the way down because from what the video was saying that what I should do, and probably the reason I fell. Thanks so much guys I appreciate it

Anticipation will help you. Unclip several yards before you need to stop. That way there is no hurry, no need to get nervous. Then coast to the stop, or pedal with just one foot, or push on the pedal while unclipped. All of these will work. I always unclip the same foot when I stop, leaving the other clipped. That helped in that you'll "master" that foot well.

Don't get embarrassed about this. Everyone does something stupid with their clipless pedals and falls once or twice a year. I know only one guy who claims he's never fallen because of his clipless pedals. I think he lies.

HTH makes the most important point to remember... EVERYONE has experienced this, from Lance Armstrong on down... we've all bit the dust trying to get unclipped. He also makes a good point about anticipating your stops... Start unclipping as you're still rolling up to the stop and you're much less likely to get nervous. Also, don't try pushing your heal down or any of the other stuff you read online. You just want to rotate your heal AWAY from the bike's frame. It's often easier to do this at the bottom of the pedal stroke but you want to keep your foot fairly flat. Just twist outward with your heel and, depending on what pedals you use, you'll get about 5-15 degrees of rotation before it unclips.

That being said, depending on the pedals you're using you may be able to back off the release tension to make it easier to get in and out... Speedplay even makes a set of their Zero pedals called 'light action' that are incredibly easy to get out of so that may be worth considering too. Some pedals have a fairly high release tension and, if that's what you're running, it may just be a bit more tension than you're ready for yet.

Take a look at the pedals. There should be a tension adjustment for each side of the pedal. Turn it to the left counterclockwise ( - ) direction to reduce the amount of pressure required to clip in and out. Look at the screw threads and make sure you do not adjust it too far where it comes out.

To clip out twist you heel to the outside not down. You can also twist your heel to the inside. Find a place like a picnic table to place one foot on while you sit on your bike and practice clipping in and out with the other foot. Repeat on the other foot.

I always clip out way before I have to stop. That way you don't panic if you don't get it on the first try. Everyone falls over sooner or later. Trying to catch your self can be worse then just going with it. It won't hurt up unclip both pedals until you get use to them.
