Not recently on principle. Of course politicians support anything that helps their particular agenda and "States Rights" has often been just a code-word for opposition to minority rights, which has been part of the federal agenda since 1860.

Originally, Conservative Adams and his Federalists opposed Liberal Jefferson and his Democratic Republicans. The first Republican, Lincoln was obviously a federalist. I think that when Teddy Roosevelt, a progressive federalist was forced out of the Republican Party in 1912, the party became solidly conservative and anti-federalist. It remained so during the Roosevelt and Truman years, except with regards to defense.

In the 1950s, Neo-cons became federalists because anti-communism had became a central federal issue. Democrats were split over the issue of federalism with most liberals favoring it, but with Dixiecrats, favoring states rights. After the censure of Joseph McCarthy and the bi-partisan passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Dixiecrats began to die out, and Republican conservatives took their place (especially in the solidly red deep south and Arizona). Goldwater and Reagan conservatives talk states rights, but increased the power of the federal government whenever they were in office.

Governor Jan Brewer (Republican) (SB1070) trying relentlessly to get help securing Arizona's borders only to be sued by her own Federal Government Administration and getting to the UN involved. Very good example to all Arizonians! :-) GO ARIZONA!

The right believes it should be a national protection and shouldn't be abolished even on the state level.

Right to die laws, drug laws,partial birth abortion, emanate domain laws, and gun laws, are recent examples where Conservatives wanted the congress or federal courts to overturn state law.

California's push to legalize weed is sort of an example of this.
