I can't pump gas! My fuel tank overflows even though it's nearly empty. Help!?

Does anyone know what might be wrong when you try and pump gas, even though the tank is nearly empty, gasoline starts gushing back out of the tank after only seconds of pumping.. It's like the human equivalent of acid-reflux.. Does anyone know what might be wrong and how expensive a repair would be?

Update:

Hi Jake, no trust me it's not the gauge. It's really nearly empty.

Hi Boost Logic, thank you for the quick response. Can you explain a bit more what that means (I'm sorry I'm really ignorant about cars..) Is it serious? expensive to repair? dangerous to drive until repaired? Really appreciate your insights.

Update 2:

Hi Mustanger, Thanks for the detailed explanation and advice. Very useful and much appreciated!!

Thank you everyone. You guys are awesome. I feel better already!

The tank has an air relief so that the air in the tank is expelled as the gas is pumped in. If that is clogged you'll have the symptoms you're experiencing. A temporary way around so you can get gas in is to pull the nozzle up so there is some room between it and the filler opening, to let the air escape, then pump slowly. Take it to a garage and explain the problem. It could be the vent hose got crushed or that a foreign object got in it.

For now, pull the gas pump handle valve very slowly so your car will refuel. It sounds as if your fuel tank air vent line which runs parallel with your fuel fill tube may be partially of fully plugged. You may find the fuel fill and vent line needs to be replaced.

Some gas stations have pumps that fill the tanks much faster than others. Look for a station that has has pumps that take all day to fill the tank.

Without knowing the year make and model of your car I couldn't tell you what a new one would cost.

I would take it back to where ever he bought it and make them fix it. Are you sure its not the gas station hes going to? If he uses the same pump every time like some people do, that could be it.

It sounds like the fuel filler hose is blocked. If that is the actual problem it shouldn't be very expensive to repair.
