I have files go missing and my computer restarts and shuts down plus my ping count keeps bouncing to 999 ?
My downloads folder keeps coming up empty and my ping rate in quake live is usually between 20 and 60, but every so often it bounces to 999 and i get errors saying connection interrupted? What is going on?

Sounds like you have malware for viruses download run all of these over the PC they are free
