Spanish - Hablando or Hablanda?

Question

When saying 'She is talking on the phone', why can one say - Está hablando por teléfono. I thought it would have to be - Ella habla por teléfono.

The gerund (hablando) is does not change gender.  Therefore...it'd always hablando.

But you can say "Está hablando por el teléfono" or "Habla por el teléfono".  I would use the former if someone asked me what she was doing right then, though.

Ella està hablando por teléfono : she is talking on the phone.
If you have trouble with o - a here, just think it's the same as in English : you don't say 'She's talkinga on the phone'.
