Can a bad DVD destroy a DVD player?

I paid allot of money for a Blu-Ray and a friend/neighbor brought a movie for me to try in my player as it wouldn't play right in hers and she was wondering if it was because of her player. I had the same problem( a large black box in the center of my TV screen.) Now I can't play any movie! I had the black box with the next 2 movies I tried then the 3rd one froze. I have unplugged my Blu-Ray , then plugged player then plugged it back in, as I was trying to reset it. I still have the same problem. I have called th 1800# for my machine and they can't figure out what the problem is. Any suggestion's?

Update:

I had just played a movie an hour before without problems.

As far as I know a disc shouldn't damage any digital CD, DVD or Blu-Ray player. The players use a laser scan to pick up the digital material on the disc.

I don't have a Blu-Ray player, but I have had several CD players, DVD players and computers with CD/DVD-ROM capability. What you may have is memory from the disc you tried to play remaining in the player. Some DVD players remember where you were on a particular DVD when you stopped and removed it to play a different disc. Blu-Ray may do the same thing.

I would take it back to the dealer or to a service center. They should be able to correct the problem or tell you how to correct it. If the disc had dust or lint on it there is a possibility that could have interfered with the laser source, but that would be very unusual with a new disc.

Take the disc to several stores that sell players and ask for a demo with your disc to see if you like their equipment. Don't tell them anything about the disc. Be sure to show them the disc first. If the disc plays fine then you will know the problem lies in the home equipment. Good luck.

If it is the disk, get rid of it quick.

Try unplugging it and let it set for 24 hours when you replug it in it may reset its self and play again won't hurt - - -give it a try it has worked for me.
