Australia will slash its migrant intake by 130,000 under a coalition government, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says in a News Ltd column.
In an opinion column on Sunday, Mr Abbott said his cuts would mean Australia would accept no more than 170,000 immigrants a year.
He said it would reduce Australia's annual population growth to 1.4 per cent from more than two per cent.
"The immigration program should focus on immigrants who will make a contribution to our country and who are likely to be proud of their new nationality," Mr Abbott writes.
He says Australians are concerned about the fast growing population and the pressure it is putting on cities that are choking on traffic.
"An incoming coalition government would maintain skilled migration numbers within the 170,000 a year limit by cracking down on dubious applicants," he says.
And in echoes of former prime minister John Howard, Mr Abbott said: "We will determine who comes to our country and the circumstances under which they come."

Absolutely, I've always liked Australia and Aussies.
Oz can get away with that where as we cannot without being labeled as racists.

Great idea. But Australia has the advantage of being a single country occupying an entire continent. Its about 100 miles from Papua New Guinea to the northern tip of Australia, and that Northern tip is just a narrow point of land. We've got a 2000+ or - mile border that just gets run across.

Yes, and it would be even better if to recoup some the financial burden we sold each illegal alien caught into the USA into an Indentured servitude of 12 years to south African Diamond mines.
Note: Indentured servitude is not slavery but where a debtor is contracted to work for a certain amount and up to 80% of their wages are paid annually to the person, company, or nation to whom they owed the debt!

Yes. And I'd take John Howard as our American president, no problem, even if he wasn't born here. Our current president wasn't either. We definitely need white men with marbles all over the Western World.
