Religious Peeps and Atheists - why bother?

Why bother?

When people start acting in a secular way, sure.

When religious views are kept out of government policies, sure.

When babies needing medical attention are denied it by their parents because of the parents' religious views and the babies die, we have a problem. Fix that, and sure.

When our governments time and tax dollars are not wasted by crap like the Kansas City / Intelligent Design case, sure.

When an American Senator says he doesn't care about the environment because he and other good Christians will be raptured long before global warming becomes a problem, we have a problem. Stop electing buffoons like him and sure.

When surveys say that Americans would rather elect a convicted felon or a pedophile over an atheist, we have a problem. Get a clue, and sure.

When you realize the difference between what you think is a sin and human rights and you stop harrassing homosexuals, and allow equal marriage, sure.

I don't have to convince everyone. I just want to help guide who I can away from the stupidity mentioned above. If I can convince one person, I've done my job. In turn, they might convince one more person, etc, etc, etc.

I don't blame the Christians for arguing, because if you truly believe that everyone is damned to Hell for not believing, you'd have to be pretty misanthropic not to spread the word.

I don't blame atheists. If you think something is impeding progress, then take a stand against it and be brave.

Much of this is not about convincing the other side. It's about convincing the ones that aren't sure. Not only that, but people on both sides have swapped sides before. I used to be a theist at one time, but after hearing some of the arguments that atheists made, I just felt I couldn't BS myself anymore.

I can understand a lack of evidence for a claim, thank you very much.

But more importantly, I can quite possibly do some good. Not for the hardcore ones-but keep in mind, for every person posting somewhere, there are ten people lurking at least, and a lot of them are fence-sitters.

But if you want to know why, just take a look below. I wish I'd been able to know I wasn't alone when I was 14.

Dennis, it’s official – you’re the idiot in this post. There is always one that trumps the others. I knew it partly from your answer and partly from your barely-legible English. You are obviously not a philologist. Which brings me to my next point…

A philologist is someone who studies language. I know because I am a philologist of German and Russian. Look it up in the dictionary if you don’t believe me.

You second point about a larger brain and the age of your theory, which you never stated, was not understandable in the least.

And while yes, your arguments are free, there are many societies – religious and secular – and PAC and interest groups that spend lots of money promoting not just to their ideas, but specifically to the battle between the atheists and the religious.

A theologian with the highest caliber mind, sounds to me like Philologist (yes, that is how it is spelled, I am talking about a different philosophy) with that description would be Friedrich Nietzsche!

Because my brain is larger and heavier than yours, and my theory is only about 3 years old, vs. the idea of a god being over 20,000! Try doing your math homework next time!

My arguments are free, I don't pay money for them! Try going to Economics tomorrow!

You may never get complete agreement but the debate keeps people in check and make it intolerable that fanatics, say, burn witches and engage in holy crusades.

The fact that religion is largely benign in my country is largely down to the above, something that can't be said for parts of there world where there is no arena for debate.

The problem isn't about who is correct - it's who is attempting to insert their superstitious religious nonsense into legislation and science classrooms.

Atheists don't argue about who is correct - they simply don't believe in 'god(s)'.

Why even bother posting this, people will be people and people debate and argue till they die, get over it and if you don't like to see it then stay off of here simple as that!

Religion left unchecked is terribly dangerous, see the dark ages, crusades, inquisition, 9/11...

Whaaaat ??? !!! Atheists "small minded" ? How do you ever, suppose that world's economy got in the mess it is currently in if Atheists were so small minded? It is religion that did it - you know, the religion of $ which Atheists swear and live by?
