    A person who assists a professional in the workplace. It depends a great deal on the line of work, but for example, a professor of archeology might be out an a dig in a remote area, assisted by a number of graduate students. S/he might also have a paid field assistant to coordinate the students activities, record the findings of the day, etc.

    PS: I was once told, "There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers." I still believe that.
