What makes blind faith a virtue?

Hi all,

One question that's been on my mind lately is why faith is considered a virtue by many world religions. I'm not talking about trust between persons here or trust based on prior experience--I'm talking about the kind of blind faith referenced in the passage "blessed is he who has not seen but has believed."

What I'm wondering is, why is this considered a good thing? If we are to believe the teachings of one religion without seeing evidence, what's to stop us from believing any old teaching we come across without seeing evidence? And if we are supposed to look for evidence, then why is it a bad thing to be a "doubting Thomas?"

I've heard various interpretations of this some say you "just know" when you hear the truth, "as the sheep know the voice of the shepherd." Others say that faith is not a virtue but rather a gift from God, as St. Paul seems to reference when talking about his conversion. Still others say that we should try having faith and wait for evidence to follow as a result of our faithful practices.

What do you think?

The term "Blind Faith" is a misnomer. Hebrews 11:1 calls faith "...the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (some translations say "assurance," but both are valid translations). Faith is a type of evidence, like anecdotal evidence, sensory evidence, and deductive evidence, among others.

In regards to a virtue: Augustine claims that man can do no good without God, which is a fairly accepted premise within many Christian circles. Therefore, there are NO virtues that are not gifts from God. If that means to you that there are no virtues, then so be it.

I should also point out that it does not say "virtuous is he who has not seen but has believed," but rather "blessed." What would you call a positive ability given to a person by God? I would call it a blessing.

You put your money in the plate.

The Church can eat and sleep at once.

    So they get by OK.

The blinder you are, the better. The less thay have to wrestle with you about your faith.

Ideally, they will discover a new sacrament called brain removal.

Once they have your brain out, your wallet is easy pickens.

At my Chatauquas, I never collected a dime until I got that staff and miter from Father Guido Sarducci. I got the extra big miter with diffraction grating "jewels" on it, and fiberoptic powered flashing lights.

Now, the bucks are flowing in. I'm thinking of adding incense, and maybe selling a few indulgences, and mortgage backed securities on the side.

Being an atheist I can't offer salvation or eternal life, but I can guarantee that once they're dead, they will stay dead, and to a lot of them, that's good enough. These are people who are on the verge of experiencing Obamacare, so they are bit leary about their longevity anyway.

    Donald Berwin took an ax and gave Medicare 40 whacks;

And when he saw the job was done, he gave Social Security 41.

Old age, these days, is not for sissies.

Going through it blindly, or even brain-free might, for some people, be a blessing.

Who said my faith is blind. Actually the lack of faith is blindness. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen. So I don't believe just because someone told me to, I believe because it has evidence in my life. Fruits. If it is good it bears good fruit, good things. If something is bad it will bear bad fruit, nothing or bad things will happen. So far the good fruits outweigh the bad in my life so Jesus is Lord.

Well a WHOLE bunch of folks watched God part the Red Sea and destroy their enemies for them and many still did not get the message and the earth swallowed them up.

Later somebody gave the Greeks a book about it and they were like AOK! count us in!

Some folks just don't get it even with the proof. ( see fake moon landing conspiracy theory ) Some just naturally get it.

I think blind faith will eventually lead one to blind ignorance and failed ideals about GOD.

That is why blind faith must be careful educated so one use their knowledge to proclaim and to live their faith openly.

Some people feel that they need this type of faith. It gives them purpose just like yours and my faith in our own logic and reason give us purpose.

Both in a sense gives a path to self peace.
