AFL footy position suits me?

One of my mate's teams has been decimated through injury and people who have quit turning up, so he's asked me to come an play for the second half of the season. Its like 5th division so nothing nothing serious but i want to have a basic idea of what i'll play and what to do in that position when I get there. I have a Basketball and league background, my kicking needs some work. 184cm and 74kgs and am very fit. (I was thinking somewhere in defence as I think my basketball training would help with that.

    romper stomper is right in that your a bit light. you said your kicking needs work, which cuts you away from the forward line. personally I would play you on the half back flank, but you need a fair bit of time before I would give you an unforced game.The other thing you need to think of is the registration window is due to close, if it hasn't already. If your serious about having a go, spend some extra training time with your mate working on your kicking, and if possible do some upper body weights training. You will go all right if you listen to your coach and concentrate on improving your skills and team work. Good luck to you mate, hope you do well.

    You sound like you got the complete package their... DONT limit yourself by thinking that you are the best at this position or that position.. Who knows in 5 years time what position you play.. I used to play full back in U-13s, then I went into RUCK in U-14s, then in U-15s I was forward pocket (cos I was a goal sneak)... Now I'm either at half back, half forward or full back!!! But with your skills, you might excel the most being an on baller or midfielder type. Keep practicing your kick for goal... since you are good on both legs this is a very handy attribute for kicking goals. Keep running and keep up the fitness... Cos every year, the game gets harder and faster... and you have less time to run with the ball!

    First things first, you won't be playing AFL, unless one of the 16 clubs has drafted you, the game is NOT called AFL it is called Aussie Rules.

    You haven't said what age group, if any. you are planning to play in, 74kgs is pretty light for that size, my thinking is they'll probably play you in the forward line where you can't give away free kicks or let your man kick a few goals, that's what i would do with someone who has never played Aussie Rules (note i never said AFL) before.
