What is with this 'Southern Ireland' business? Don't people know that the name of the state is?
of the state is the Republic of Ireland, also called Eire, and referred to as Ireland also, and that to differentiate between the Republic and Northern Ireland, people from Northern Ireland say they are from Northern Ireland?
It's almost 90 years since Ireland became a republic. You'd think people would catch on.
Rotifer, this happens A LOT on Yahoo Answers.

Ignorance
There you go. From my experience, the majority that referred this country to 'Southern Ireland' were English.....and liked to piss people off by saying it when they discovered they were talking to an Irish person in a call centre. That and 'aren't you far from home?' was another that made me want to kill the phone.
There is no such thing as 'Southern Ireland' and never will be.

I haven't heard anyone refer to it as Southern Ireland, I've only heard it referred to as Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and Eire. But you're right to complain if they are doing that. I think most people in the UK know what to call the Republic of Ireland, couldn't speak for the media or anyone else.

It is what people in the British Isles call that bit of Germany which the Germans call the 'Bundesland von Südirland'

With my family roots being in Strabane I understand the problem and agree there is a lot of ignorance about. I get round the problem by only ever using the terms "Northern Ireland" and "Eire".
Saves an awful lot of problems but don't expect the Americans to understand.

No, they most probably do not know the correct name of the state, the world is an exceedingly large place, why would everyone in the world be privy to this piece of information.
Particularly given the fact that the British media, American media, and others, regularly refer to the state as Southern Ireland or the South of Ireland when wishing to specify 'Not Northern Ireland'
Yes, quite true, this is an inaccuracy, but we cannot stop the media doing it, just as we cannot stop the media and politicians going on about 'Britain' when they mean United Kingdom, among other inaccuracies,
Southern Ireland, one of the former constituent countries of the United Kingdom which only exist for just over a year is hardly what people are referring to.. this was so long ago that most people outside of Ireland would not even be aware that the state ever existed. It is not taught about or even mentioned in schools outside of Ireland..
If someone referrs to Ireland as Southern Ireland, the intelligent thing to do would be to answer their question first, then politely point out the correct name of the state, instead of the patronising, abrupt and quite frankly rude way it is currently being bayoneted down unwitting user's throats.
Some answerers don't even bother to answer the question, and simply go on a rant about how Southern Ireland should not be used. Being Irish myself I do on my visits to this section find certain users incredibly uptight and must give potential visitors to our country a very bad impression indeed.

southern ireland is the geographical name and the republic is the legal/political name

You and I both answered yet another question about passports, and both of us got fired with thumbs down (I got 11 to be precise, and you 6 I think^^),because we mentioned this exact issue.I think that people use the logic that since there is a Northern Ireland, there has to be a Southern Ireland too, this is wrong of course.Could be worse I suppose,I met two yanks last summer who said to me that they would not be visiting ireland, because ''Isn't there a war over there?''

You don't seem to know the name of the state either!!! What you mean it's 90 years since Ireland became a republic?
Ireland is an island. The name of the country you are talking about is the Republic of Ireland. You don't hear Northern Irish people refer to their country as Ireland. They don't have that right and neither do you - especially since the Republic no longer claimed the 6 counties under the Anglo Irish Accord.
You'd think you'd catch on. Thicko.

But after so many years of the troubles, it can take time for people to realise that Ireland is one island divided between two countries NI and Eire.

Sorry but I agree with the answerer above, Ireland's not a big place, there are a number of different names for the Island and the 2 countries on it...............If you really do feel compelled to correct someone could you not at least do it nicely!!!???
