Is having an M.A.T. degree an asset or a liability for getting a first teaching job?
I have heard about equal numbers of teachers both encourage and discourage me from completing this degree. One group says I will not be hired because I cost more, and the other tells me I will not be hired because I do not stand out with my credentials. I am confused, and I have to make a decision.

It is really a catch 22 and depends on the district. Some districts are suffering from severe staffing issues related to budget and can't afford to higher teachers with a Masters because of the added cost. Others will jump at the possibility because they are trying to increase the level of credentials in their system.

I started teaching directly after earning my B.S.Ed, and hardly consider myself prepared back then. Teaching that first year was like jumping into a freezing cold swimming pool. The teachers I know who earned their M.A.T before beginning to teach seem to be better prepared for that first job. So, if I were an administrator, I'd hire more M.A.T candidates that newly minted B.S.Eds.
