Is a Hobby Breeder just a new way to say BYB?

Update:

I had never seen the term before so I was just wondering.

    Yes and no.

My friend shows champion dalmations. They have had all health tests and the pups are BAER tested. She uses champion stud dogs however in 15 years she has only had 6 litters and then only when she has a waiting list and wants a pup for herself. she herself calls herself a hobby breeder.

HOWEVER BYB's are now calling themselves this to make it sound better. If you plan on getting a pup from someone who calls themself this ask to see proof of all health tests, ask about any show wins etc.

No. Far from it. Hobby breeders do it to better the breed which is the main reason you should breed in the first place. Their dogs have working/show titles and health clearances on all their dogs. They also make sure their puppies are socialized and have good temperaments. They also will not sell to just anyone and they pick the puppy that fits your lifestyle. They will also ask you many questions.

Does this kennel look like a back yard breeder to you?

    No?

Quite right, it is one of the top show kennels in England, & they are hobby breeders because it is not their full-time job, & their main source of income. Breeding & showing in far from a cheap hobby & the majority of the good breeders are hobby breeders.

The Dobermann is the breed they have an abiding interest in, have in-depth knowledge of the breed, breed to & have their dogs judged against the standard, many of their dogs are titled in show/sport & use a diverse gene pool, without losing type.

This kennel also has culling potential purchasers down to a fine art & someone who is deemed suited will typically have a one year wait on their list for a dog of their breeding.

that would depend on one's definition of "hobby breeder"

to me, a hobby breeder is someone who does show, does health tests, etc.. but only has a few dogs and breeds maybe once every few years. They are breeding for healthy, quality dogs. This is not a back yard breeder.

Someone who breeds their pet quality dogs is a back yard breeder.

Basically it is now. Hobby breeders used to stand for show ppl who has only 1,2 dogs they showed & bred. Then BYBs started using it to make themselves sound better & more legit. Here is an easy chart showing the difference.

Heck no! Most people who show their dogs consider themselves to be hobby breeders.

Yep. If they're not breeding show dogs, they're just adding puppies of pet quality to the large amount of dogs that need homes.

Yep. Breeding should not be looked at as a "hobby". It's serious business. You are creating new lives. Serious things can go wrong during the birth, and many people are not ready for it because they consider it a "hobby".

Edit: Professional does not equal "hobby".
