Engine oil overfill on 1993 Honda Civic, any advice?
Hi there,
I overfilled my car on engine oil last night. I got into work and the car was blowing smoke from what seemed to be underneath the oil tank. I drained the excess oil and steam cleaned the inside of the bonnet as the dipstick had fallen off and the oil was everywhere. I drove home for 11 miles and when I was home I had another look, the car was still blowing a bit of smoke but nothing like it did before. Is that normal? Any advice is really appreciated.
Let me just add, before I steam cleaned I used gunk to clean the oil from inside the bonnet.

You should be ok. Some of the oil probably ran underneath the body and may continue to drip on the exhaust system for a little while; this will create ongoing decreasing smoke for a bit. Get a replacement dip stick, or plug its tube as some oil may be forced up out of the tube from blow-by fume pressure.

Depends how much you overfilled it. My dad placed 5 quarts instead of 4. He drained everything and then pored 1 quart back in the bottle, then he pored the rest back in the engine. quick and easy, and less headache. You dont want your engine blowing alot of smoke down the street or having oil splatter all over the place.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you've drained the excess oil you should be safe. If you still have smoke blowing out your tailpipe (heh heh) it's probably just a bit of excess still in the system and will probably burn off within the next 2 days or so.
