How do I treat my dog's split pad?
My lab mix has a cut on one of her pads on her back left foot. It's not bleeding profusely but there is blood and I can see into the cut. Do I keep it moisturized and let it heal on its own? Do I need to bandage it?
I'll take her to the vet if I need to, but I figure that all I would get is the same advice I could get here, but for about sixty dollars more.
I would also appreciate if you listed your sources [are you a vet, has your dog had this before, etc.]. Thank you so much!

If it's bleeding, you can apply gentle pressure for up to 5 minutes. If it stops, great. If not, you might need a stitch or two. For the cut itself, the only thing that you can do at home is wash it well with peroxide or betadine and then apply some neosporin ointment. To keep it clean and protected, you can slide a baby or child's sock over the foot.
Keep an eye out for swelling, discharge and other symptoms.

Quelle(n): My Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever has cut his pad before. He jumped at the home-treatment but it healed it up. Cuts aren't major problems for dogs unless they don't get better within a week or become infected [or different symptoms appear as listed above]. - Anonymvor 5 Jahren
A dog can make a wound worse by continuing to lick it, they keep it moist, bacteria and puss develop, as well as hot spots and whatnot. There could still be something in the wound, if it heals over it - it will stay infected. Chances are it needs to be flushed out, cleaned up and stitched. Feet are hard to heal, especially a pad that is constantly moving. Ordinarily, something small on the pad I would treat at home, but if it's large and bleeding, I would go see your vet. They will probably give you a soft cone to stop the dog from aggravating the foot to let it heal, and I would restrict the dog's movement to let it heal. On the way to the vet, wrap the dog's paw loosely in gauze, cotton between the toes, and put a sock over the foot to prevent more dirt and debris from entering the wound.

I use Super Glue, and the hubby also uses Super Glue on his fingers when they become split from working outside. There is NO need for a vet unless the cut doesn't get better in a reasonable time. You might want to try to bandage it, altho it's practically impossible to keep a bandage on a dog's foot.
Don't listen to the people who tell you to rush out to the vet's.

Skipper is correct. My dog cut, and scraped a load of skin off of his pads; running around on asphalt at a tennis court.
We just went easy on the exercise until it healed. He licked them which kept it clean and we kept an eye on it.
We also didn't let him run around on asphalt again!!!
My dog is insured and so I have no problems about taking him to the vet. Just didn't think they would be much they could do about it.
We would have taken him if the cut was really deep, he was in pain etc. but he didn't seem to think it was much of a problem, so neither did we.

Since it is in a spot that can easily get infected, if it were me, I would take my dog to the vet.

I think it would be best to take her to the vet. Or at least call the vet and ask.
