information poll re: neutering of dogs (pt 1 of 2)?
this is not to discuss the (dubious) health benefits of total castration, all such answer/rants will be reported.
if you have a neutered male dog, please answer the following:
when was your dog neutered:
1 - less than six months
2 - six months to less than one year
3 - one year to less than two years
4 - two years or more
5 - no idea - he was that way when i got him
are you happy your dog was neutered?
1 - yes, totally and without reservation
2 - yes, but i have regrets
3 - no
since your dog was neutered, have you noticed any physical changes?
1 - yes: i like them
2 - yes: i don't like them
3 - no
since your dog was neutered, have you noticed any mental/emotional/behavioral changes:
1 - yes: i like them
2 - yes: i don't like them
3 - no
if you had the chance, would you have chosen a vasectomy (tubes tied) for your dog, rather than a total castration (yes/no)?
CC: the information about health benefits is based on studies done in the 1960s. they found that 1 in 8 male dogs will develop prostate problems and theorized that since human prostate problems respond to the presense of testosterone, castration should prevent it. that was bad science - the original study did not specify neutered or intact in the prostate data.
there has since been a more recent study evaluating current data that presents a very different picture: http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTermHealthEffec...

When was your dog neutered: (2) 9.5 months
Are you happy your dog was neutered? (2)
Since your dog was neutered, have you noticed any physical changes? (3) ? But then again at 9.5 months of a age a large breed dog has not fully matured.
Since your dog was neutered, have you noticed any mental/emotional/behavioral changes: (1)
Total castration I would have no reason to reverse a vasectomy. As my dog is not of breeding or show quality, nor is he a working dog.

I have three males, two neutered, one intact. The intact male is a working dog. The oldest GSD was neutered in an effort to resolve some problems they had with him in tracking (he was distracted by other dog's urine and marking). He was supposed to be a Police K9. The neutering did not work and he was washed out. Because he was neutered, he could not be returned and ended up a pet. Had he not been neutered, I would nto have him, so he is not a typical neuter case. So for this, I will only refer to my Lab.

(the GSD was neutered after a year but less than two

I am seriously considering not neutering any future dogs. I thought at the time it was best, but have done a lot more research now.
I am fully confident in my ability to keep any future dogs from mating, so without significant health benefits, I am not sure why I would

No.
My dog was neutered at 16mo. He is a fully developed male dog- he is not fat, has all of the appropriate secondary sex characteristics, and is in every way a healthy adult male dog. The SLIGHT behavioral changes Ive noticed are that he's more comfortable around strange dogs and is more at ease in the house. I have two male dogs, castration, in my opinion, is easy, safe and acceptable for my situation.

are you happy your dog was neutered?
I'm ambivalent about it

since your dog was neutered, have you noticed any physical changes?
1 - yes: i like them (since you didn't specify what sort of physical changes, he of course no longer has his balls, and it's more appealing that way. But he hasn't gained weight or anything)
since your dog was neutered, have you noticed any mental/emotional/behavioral changes:
1 - yes: i like them (After neutering he no longer marked inside houses, he was potty trained before neutering but marked at other people's houses, he also became more clam and stopped mounting other dogs, males and females)

4 1/2 months old. He started humping stuffed animals and raising his leg... He was already large for his age so i got it done early
are you happy your dog was neutered?
1 - yes, totally and without reservation
I never planned to breed him so yes. He is perfectly fine, healthy and is 61 pounds! it didnt hurt his growth at all obviously. He doesnt run after girl dogs, become aggressive with anyone/anything and we can take a walk without have to "Claim" every bush and the street. He doesnt hump things anymore and pees like a girl dog lol.
since your dog was neutered, have you noticed any physical changes?
3 - no
he was the same pup as always, nothing changed in personality and he doesnt have a "pooch". Id ont think he knew he was neutered, he was energetic and i was the one who lockeing him in his crate because he wanted to play from day 1 and wasnt resting like he should.
i guess "yes" if you count that he doesnt hump things anymore...

he is still a hyper crazy nut who loves his walks and runs and loves life. he doesnt know he was neutered
if you had the chance, would you have chosen a vasectomy (tubes tied) for your dog, rather than a total castration (yes/no)?
no, everything worked out perfect and he doesnt have anything gross hanging around his rear... prolly more expensive too.

Are you happy your dog was neutered?
1 - Yes. I have no intentions of Breeding and I don't know how to breed, so why not?
Since your dog was neutered, have you noticed any physical changes?
3 - No. Though, he was really tired after his surgery and MUST have been PREVENTED from all vigorous exercise and jumping. Which is fine and is the usual thing that he MUST have.
Since your dog was neutered, have you noticed any mental/emotional/behavioral changes?
3 - No.
Last Question : NO!
#I also have a Newfie puppy. Same answers to all the questions except he was neutered at 7.5 months.

The male dog I have, I got him off the streets so he is dog agressive.
He got neutered 6 months after we "claimed" him, he was about 3 yrs old that time already an adult.
No physical changes, still the same health weight. He is just dog agressive doesn't care if male or female, but that is also due to the fact that he has less space, before he was a street dog when he would roam free.
I will always have spayed and neutered animals, I am not a reputable breeder and besides the fact of over population it is to prevent cancer, and for his well being of health.
Some one told me that because I neutered him he had to show his dominant behavior in a different way so he got more agressive, dont know if that is true.
