A general question regarding the nude human figure in art?

Do you feel it's important? If so, how? If not, why? I'm not interested in pornography, simply the role of the nude human figure in art, if there is one. Thank you.

Update:

I myself am an artist and have found life-drawing and painting to be really important to the work I make. Regardless of how much one is delving into the psyche and working from the subconscious, basic drawing skills are still very important, and life studies are still a great way of improving these. I just wanted to know what others thought.

No, I do not consider it important anymore...

Well, unless one wishes to end up living ones whole life

working for a museum restoring mouldy ink drawings and etchings

for no more real pay than a Playboy Bunny.

Artists today, know form but that's not what really intrigues them.

They are more interested in the interior landscapes of of the subconscious and psyche.

You call yourself an artist but you don't even know whether or there is a role for the nude human figure in art.

You think you're some kind of artist, but you're not.

You are someone who calls themselves an artist just to sound a bit more interesting and less mediocre .

So don't ask questions like this because you are just making a complete fool of yourself and everyone can see straight through you.

cheers for the 2 points :)

Yes i find it invaluable. you are learning so many things but one of the important aspects of life art is you draw what you see not what you think you see.

This is an essential aspect of art. even if you work in an abstract form you still need to know where it came from etc

I think its a shame that some art colleges and uni's no longer provide this to their new students.

A worthwhile question to ask. If we don't discover and connect to other artists how can we connect to the public

By the way have you checked out LifeArt.co.uk which is a community that appreciates the life art form of art

I suppose the human being is the most intricate figure in nature. To be able to see all the ebb and flow of the human body, it would be necessary to see it unclothed. Even when an artist is painting/drawing clothed figures it would be important to know how the muscles and bones looked underneath to get the proper proportions. I'm not a very good artist so these are just my thoughts on the subject, Orla.

Nude figures look fantastic in any form of art, sketches, sculptures, paintings - for me it reflects the passionate side of art and creativity, a celebration of the flesh and the erotic quality of the human body is very much highlighted. And as art is all about the senses and what the piece inspires, the naked human form is a very beautiful way of illustrating this.

nudety is not a big deal and people need to get over they're shame. the nude form is not perverted or shameful. Children should not be sheltered from a nude statue. Any fanatic that things they're daughter will never see a penis if they demolish the david will have a painful life chasing animals around with diapers.

I think the nude human figure is extremely important as no matter how you depict the body, everybody in the world can relate to it, even if they are offended or it doesn't look like them, they can still relate and that is one of the most important things in art.

Yes, it's important for a couple of reasons. Artists have long found the human body to be among the most difficult and challenging items to paint correctly, and a mastery of the body has been regarded as demonstrating artistic mastery in general. For centuries, the ability to paint or sculpt finely-rendered nudes, to exhibit one's long observation, study, and understanding of the human body, was a major goal.

This is why art classes have routinely included life-drawing classes involving nude models. Another reason is that even painting clothed figures correctly and effectively requires an understanding of the underlying structure of muscles and limbs, of human anatomy and the effects of movement. Learning how to draw and paint a nude is simply part of the foundation of classical, traditional art training. Even the most famed and important abstract artists have undergone that training.
