It is wonderful that you are considering taking AP classes. However, AP classes vary dramatically between schools and between instructors. Since the goal of an AP class is to pass the corresponding AP test in May, your evaluation should be based on how many of the students who took a given AP class passed the test. A good AP class will have a high percentage of students who pass the test. There are many AP classes that are interesting, have great projects, & have challenging activities but do not prepare students for the test. They should more accurately be called Honors classes rather than AP classes.
In addition to the academic challenge AP classes generally provide, the main benefit of taking an AP class is that by passing the test, the student receives college credit for that class. Most colleges recognize the AP test and grant credit for a lower division course. So passing AP tests is a great way to get a head start on college and reduces the number of classes you will need to take once you get to college & maybe even your college costs. If you are going to put all the time into an AP class, make sure you find one that will prepare you for passing the test.
The interest factor is one that only you can determine. Talk to other students who have taken the classes you are considering & with the instructors themselves. Compare their responses with your personal areas of interest to determine if it is a class you will be interested in. A good instructor can help you love a class you may have thought you wouldn't like, so interview the instructor. Ask them what kinds of projects are assigned, and why they think you should take their class. Hopefully, they will take the time to take you seriously and help you make your decision.
