What is the immigration law about welfare?
I could not find any details maybe I am overlooking it. I have some friends who have a few kids, the stepfather is American and the family is waiting to receive their green cards. Do you know if the kids are able to get welfare assistance without any problems or will it effect their status?

It may cause their green cards to be revoked. People who are not yet US citizens are not supposed to become a "public charge" and applying for welfare can royally mess up their immigration status.

From my own experience, as long as the kids have green cards, there shouldn't be any problem

their sponsor should pay for any goverment expenditure

if he has not legally adopted them---they should not be "entitled" to anything.
